The Name Guntur is derived from Sanskrit word
Garthaputi, which is an Administrative district in Coastal Andhra Region of
Andhra Pradesh. Guntur district was founded in 18th century AD. The district Head
quarters are located in Guntur. The boundaries of Guntur are Prakasam district
to South, The River Krishna flows through North-east and East, Bay of Bengal to
South-east, Nalgonda district to North-west and Mahbubnagar district to West. According
to 2011 census, the district is the 2nd most in population consists of
4,889,230 and occupies an area about 11,391 sq.km. The new proposed capital of
Andhra Pradesh is Amaravathi which is known as Centre of Buddhist Culture is
located in Guntur district. The district lies on the Right side Bank of Krishna
River. The district is also a part of Red Corridor ie, suffered from Nexalite Insurgency.

Divisions
There are four Revenue divisions in Guntur district.
They are Tenali, Guntur, Gurazala and Narasaraopet. Each divison is divided
into mandals. There are 57 Mandals in the district, 1 Municipal Corporation ie,
Guntur and 12 Municipalities namely Tenali, Bapatla, Mangalagiri, Ponnur,
Tadepalle, Repalle, Narasaraopet, Piduguralla, Macherla, Sattenapalle,
Vinukonda, Chilakaluripet in Guntur and 1 census town ie, Vaddeswaram. There
are 3 Lok Sabha constituencies and 17 Assembly seats in the district.
Economy
The Agricultural products like Tobacco, Paddy,
Chillies, cotton and pulses are mainly cultivated in the District. These
products are majorly Exports to different parts of the world. Guntur is highly
famous for Red chillies. Medium scale industries like Textile mills, Cement,
Dairy, Biotechnology, Silk, Jute, Granite, Diamond and other Ores are located
in the district. Currently on going Project is IT park at Guntur outskirts.
Education
Educational Institutes like Government Junior
college for girls, RVR and JC college of Engineering, Guntur Medical college,
JKC college etc and Research Institutes like Central Tobacco Research
Institute, AGMARK Laboratory also located in the District.
Tourism
The Tourist Attractions like Kotappakonda, Undavalli
caves, Prakasam Barrage, Amaravathi, Kondaveedu, Nagarjuna sagar and Ethipothla
